Workshop on future of digital accessibility @ DigitaLens organised by Fondazione Fitzcarraldo

In today's increasingly digital world, accessibility has become a critical issue, ensuring that everyone can fully participate in the cultural landscape. We think, the digital realm presents a unique opportunity to enhance accessibility by breaking down barriers and creating inclusive experiences. However, we also think such requires a strategic act, including design-oriented approaches and future-thinking skills infused into the ideation of digital products and services.

With this idea in mind, we have organised a 4h hands-on workshop for the @DigitaLens training opportunity organised by Fondazione Fitzcarraldo for our dear cultural-workers. During this workshop, we have talked about the misconceptions on what it means to work with/though/for digital and how we can future think plausible, possible and preferable futures for our cultural institutions. Over 80 participants joined in this activity.

Offering a new course
on Digital Interaction
for Museums @ Polimi

We have been invited to design a studio based course for the first year students of Msc. of Digital and Interaction Design @ Politecnico di Milano, especially learning and gaining expertise in desiging for cultural institutions, specifically museums. During this semester-long course, students act and learn as a team of designers responsible to improve the experience of a museum through digital screen-based products. In the context of cultural heritage, they experiment with design research, experience and product ideation methods, and learn the basics in designing user interface principles and UX evaluation methods. The course requires students to face four milestones to help them effectively learn how to develop and present design processes and concepts.

This years students will work on designing screen-based prototypes of multi-touchpoint experiences designed for the Como’s Silk Museum.

SEPTEMBER 2024

Starting brand new courses @ Bauer - Visual Strategic Designer for culture and territory

The two-year programme trains visual designers, early on their career to analyse a cultural and territorial system, and identify its communicative, and use-value potential and developing projects varying in various forms spanning design disciplines from services and experience design, to exhibition design and visual identity.

In this specific programme, we have developed two different courses:

The first course aims to equips students with the knowledge and skills to strategically plan, define and work on cultural projects. They will learn to identify needs, opportunities, and target audiences within the cultural landscape. Students are introduced to design research methodologies specifically tailored to the cultural sector. This might involve user research, trend analysis, and historical research to inform their design decisions. This theoretical foundation course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of design principles and practices in the context of cultural heritage. They will explore methods and tools for effectively communicating cultural stories and ideas.

Our second course builds on the theoretical foundation and dives into the practical applications of how to develop innovative solutions for cultural institutions and organizations. Throughout this course, students work on a real-world project commissioned by a cultural institution or organization.

Nemo Webinar
“Museums in 2020+: The search for meaning”

It has been an honour to join the webinar series of NEMO - Network of European Museum organisations and share part of our research on the impact of Covid-19 and introduce some of the trends of our trend booklet “Museums in 2020+: The search for meaning.” With this webinar, our founder Ece has shared some data and insights about the current challenges of the new unpredictable world in which museums find themselves. With this webinar, Ece in addition has touched upon related design methods to rethink how to tackle especially the new kind of audience, hybrid context and so inform museums’ short-, mid- and long-term actions accordingly. The webinar, we aim to invite museums professionals, whether museum-leaders, curators or volunteers to ask fundamental questions that are not focused on defining an ideological museum of the future or the future of digital technologies per se, but rather reflect on the meaningful future for their museums.

Check the webinar on NEMO’s YouTube channel.
